Chapter 3Greek ArchitectureGreek Orders: Doric, Ionic, Corinthian, Post and Lintel Construction, Abacus, EchinusNow to the Greek Architecture with which most are familiar, developed with Post and Lintel Construction. We shall travel to a Greek colony, on the mainland of Italy where we will encounter the temples in Paestum, those of Ceres, Hera II, and Hera I. We will discuss the environmental tragedy, which befell Paestum 2,000 years ago. We will view Athens, its Acropolis, and as we enter the site we shall see the Propylaea, the Temple of Nike, the Parthenon, and lastly the Erechtheum. A discussion of the three Greek Orders, the Doric, Ionic, and Corinthian will ensue. Lastly, we will move onto the island of Sicily, and the Temple of Concordia in Agrigento. |
